The Serengeti Rules: The Quest to Discover How Life Works and Why It Matters

By Sean B. Carroll (2016)

How does life work? How does nature produce the right numbers of zebras and lions on the African savanna, or fish in the ocean? How do our bodies produce the right numbers of cells in our organs and bloodstream? In The Serengeti Rules, award-winning biologist and author Sean Carroll tells the stories of the pioneering scientists who sought the answers to such simple yet profoundly important questions.... —Publisher.

Centennial Community Celebration!

The San Diego Zoo is turning 100 and is kicking off the celebration this Saturday, May 14, at 6:00 PM in Balboa Park.  There will be live bands, animal presentations, food trucks and more!  There's even free entrance to a few museums, plus discounted admission to The San Diego History Center (SDHC) and the Lore Behind the Roar Exhibit.

Lore Behind the Roar is a collaborative project with the SDHC, and offers fascinating behind the scenes views from the very beginning. Here's your chance to view many objects and documents from the San Diego Zoo Global Library and Archives.  See Dr. Harry Wegeforth & Belle Benchley's partner desk, exotic ephemera from Dr. Harry's travels, news clippings from the very beginning, and much more!

If you miss LORE this Saturday, don't worry.  You have until January 2017...but you don't want to miss it!

Ask Dr. Harry & Belle

Have you read It Began with a Roar and wished you could ask Dr. Harry a few questions?  Ever wanted to learn from Belle Benchley what it was like to be a zoo director during her tenure? Here's your chance!

Join in on the fun at Think and Drink with Legendary Zoo Leaders, Wednesday, May 18, from 6:00-7:30 PM, at the San Diego History Center.  Of course, the parts of these legendary leaders will be played by historic interpreters.

SDZG employees and volunteers: Inquire for the special event discount code.  Advance registration is required.  And the SDZG Library has a great collection of books by Dr. Harry Wegeforth & Belle Benchley, should you want first-hand accounts too.
