SPRLQDT Gallery is pleased to announce its participation as embassy of The Wrong (again) - New Digital Art Biennial 2015/2016. In conjunction with the biennial, the gallery presents UV Index - Unresponsive Media an exhibition that brings together more than 25 young international artists relevant for the contemporary digital art scene.
Inspired by the abstract qualities of the UV Index, Unresponsive Media explores the tensions between the materials and techniques used by artists to produce a work, and the tools used to store and deliver the information or data. Because these are often inflexibile and unadaptable to the format being displayed – they become Unresponsive Media. The works approach various ways to relate sound and image by means of the contrast between what is contingent and what we view as computational rules we accustom to. The multiple interactions and definition of working tools beyond binary use-presence or function-integration relations generates presence and expression. They propose dislocations, errors, glitches and interventions upon interfaces. By fragmenting and distorting the fluidity of the visual language, narrations are generated that reflect various situations at the edge of the physical and the digital. In a significant combination, open to play in its various forms of inhabiting the ordinary, using computer technologies and the Internet as means of expression gives us an idea of the way digital tools and play can create dream worlds and abstract audio-visual environments.
The aesthetics and various approaches in the works comprised in this exhibition call for focused attention/viewing, opposed to the distracted viewing characteristic of mainstream information distribution channels. This is the main objective of Undervolt&co, a platform for experimental video artists initiated by the curators of this exhibition, Yoshi Sodeoka, Johnny Woods and Rea McNamara. Their project aims to support the development of video art and a rethinking of the way video art is distributed, in order to allow for creative approaches and models that can stimulate audiences and their participation.
