It's Spring Break at HHCC!

Can you believe that it is Spring Break at Hoosier Hills Career Center?  We've been busy the last few weeks at science fairs, engine competitions and completing competencies. Students are working toward various events that are happening in the spring semester such as FFA contests, HOSA state convention, and more.  We are equally proud of all of our students and have highlighted some of them in this issue.
Serving students from 5 different school corporations is an honor! We look forward to sharing the events of Hoosier Hills Career Center and the hundreds of students who use their hands and minds to create remarkable memories through the classes of which they are a part.

The land speed motorcycle won 1st place in its class at the Indiana Motorcycle Expo held at the Indiana State fairgrounds in Indianapolis on February 19.  The multi-class designed motorcycle also holds two land speed records.  The motorcycle was built by students from the Automotive Services, Automotive Collision Repair, Welding, and Drafting & Engineering classes.
Allie and Shelby, BHSN students from the Health Science Education II program recently participated in an exhibition at Summit Elementary's Science Spectacular.  They taught students how to correctly take their own oral temperatures and record them on an Excel spreadsheet. Summit Elementary teachers then used the spreadsheet to instruct students on what normal temperatures are in children.
Students won a grant from the FMCCS to build an engine for a competition at Ivy Tech Community College in Terre Haute.  The competition was to build an engine from the ground up and compete to see whose engine had the most horsepower and torque.  HHCC blew the competition away by winning both parts of the competition!  Their engine had the max horsepower of 495 and torque of 457lb.
Breanna has been in the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management program for two years and has been a stand-out student.  She plans to attend Ivy Tech Community College to major in Baking and Pastry.  Currently, she interns five days a week at Sugar Daddy's Cakes and Catering.  She has also competed at the SkillsUSA competition in 2015.
Breanna says, "My love of baking probably started when I was younger because I would always bake with my great grandma.  As I got older it has been something I've wanted to do.  I like to bake, but decorating is my favorite."  Her talent for baking and pastry shows in the cakes that she creates at Sugar Daddy's.  She has a true talent!
The Building Trades programs recently finished building a custom three-car garage for a customer.  The students built the garage from the ground up and proudly showed their work to our Assistant Director.
On March 4, 2016 three of HHCC's Welding students competed at the Midwest Technical Institute Welding Competition.  Students had to practice welding out of position (uphill, horizontal, overhead and flat) using a 7018 or equivalent rod with MIG. A written exam was also given to Flight B contestants testing their basic welding knowledge. J.D. placed first and Wyatt placed second overall!  They were thrilled to have performed so well and be recognized for their talents.
