Postcodes Galore

Welcome to another edition of the #All-Things-Spatial Newsletter. You received this email as a client of aus-emaps.com and/or subscriber to MapDeck.com. The theme of today’s communiqué is - Australian postcodes

Postcodes are by far the most popular location reference for business purposes and they are widely used for publishing social statistics. However, the definition of postcode boundaries tend to be ambiguous due to the various methodologies applied during the creation of boundaries and because there are many different versions of postcode data in circulation at any particular point in time.

It would be much easier if Australia Post published and circulated the definitive version of postcodes for everybody to use. However, this is not the case and, as a potential user, you face hard decisions about which version of postcodes to use.

In order to address some of the ambiguity surrounding postcodes, as well as the cost associated with obtaining the latest data from commercial vendors, MapDeck has released its own version of the product called Postcode Boundaries, Australia 2016

This dataset was generated from open source information, according to the rules defined by the Australia Post, and is available for free perusal with MapDeck apps or can be downloaded in GIS format for a small fee.  Read more about this dataset on our blog.

There is also a map, accessible to every MapDeck subscriber for free, which compares MapDeck’s 2016 postcodes boundaries with Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Postal Areas 2011 as well as the 2016 Victorian version of the data. Just search for “Postcodes 2016 Map, Australia” after you log in.

In addition, using the free Thematic Mapper Basic app, all three datasets can be freely “mixed and mashed” with other spatially referenced content available on MapDeck to create your own, personalised maps. Follow the links Start Here -> Learn? -> Create a simple map from the main dashboard to find out how. Additional capabilities to utilise your own data can be purchased on demand.

MapDeck is a technological breakthrough that makes personalised “map making in the Cloud” possible and practical. To continue reading about MapDeck capabilities and the newly released data please follow the links below…

“MapDeck’s functionality is broader than that of a traditional web-mapping application. That is, MapDeck is a consolidated publishing, cataloguing and information visualisation platform all in one. It enables specialised apps and associated data to be put to immediate use, the user requiring nothing more than just a web browser.”
