Strategic Investor Initiative Update

July 2016

This is a periodic newsletter of the Strategic Investor Initiative, designed to share updates on progress and next steps of the initiative and curate valuable resources on the topic. We welcome your feedback.

What is the SII?

The Strategic Investor Initiative (SII) is a collaborative forum that fundamentally changes the conversation between CEOs, Boards of Directors, and investors from short term profits to sustained long-term corporate performance. The SII will provide tools and resources designed to introduce and support market behaviors that ultimately deliver sustained long-term value for all stakeholders. Participating companies will also make commitments to explore and adopt mechanisms to shift strategies and capital from short-term to long-term.

The SII will do this through a series of strategic investor forums, an annual conference, and on-demand advisory services available to CEOs and institutional investors seeking to share long-term plans and commitments. The SII's Center for Strategic Investment will act as an clearinghouse for research, frameworks, tools, and initiatives focused on long-term value creation.

Progress to Date

After a successful soft launch with 50 CEOs at CECP's annual Board of Boards, CECP facilitated a listening tour to learn directly from companies and institutional investors about questions, opportunities, and challenges in the space of long-term value creation. Through six stops around the country hosted by Visa (San Francisco), Microsoft (New York City), Breckinridge Capital Advisors (Boston), Baker & McKenzie (Chicago), Baruch College (New York City), and PepsiCo (Washington, DC), CECP has gathered the insights of close to 250+ executives representing diverse perspectives from supply chain, CSR teams, investor relations, pension funds, and institutional investors.

Early Takeaways

Drawing from feedback from multiple perspectives from these small group discussions in a half a dozen cities across the US, the Strategic Investor Initiative will develop a white paper summarizing key findings and charting a path forward for the project. Some early themes have emerged that will be drawn out through further research:

  • Desire for clear and credible short term goals as building blocks to sustainable value creation that drive long term plans.
  • Importance of tone from the top. CEO leadership is an important catalyst for framing and prioritizing long-term value strategies, and investors have high trust in CEOs to lead the way. This reinforces CECP's unique positioning as the CEO Force for Good.
  • Need to engage with Boards of Directors to help relieve short-term pressures on CEOs and senior management.
